Pick one of these warmup exercises to start your sessions. They’re great for warming up the ear muscle, shaking off writers block, cultivating strengthening effective habits, generating musical material fast and more…

Guide time: 10-15 mins

 INSTA|CRAM
  • Find a sample from insta
  • Make a 16-bar idea which features the sample
  • Post it, tagging the artist/user
 INSTA|CRAM EXTENDED
  • Take an INSTA|CRAM idea
  • Create a contrasting 16-bar section
  • OR find a song/element/sample to mash it up with
  • Extend into a longer track ideas
  • Post it, tagging the artists/users
PLAYDATE WITH A STRANGER
  • Do something you would never normally do
  • Take it to a weird/silly/playful/unexpected place – what wouldn’t you normally do 
 PLAY WITH HOOKPAD
  • Go to https://hookpad.hooktheory.com
  • Play with chords, melodies, band instruments (etc)
  • Either save it (if you want to subscribe)… or screenshot / screen-capture record the idea… or even just delete it and let it be a moment in time…
PLAY WITH SOUND
  • Choose an instrument (this could be a software synth, any ‘real’ instrument, or some random object; it might be a brand new toy, or an old friend that’s been with you for years)
  • Create a sound from scratch in a way you’ve never done before
  • After 10mins is up, save it as a preset
WILD | IDEA
BEAT | THE | CRAP
  • Create a beat idea from scratch
  • Literally try and make it sh*t
TUBE:TORIAL
  • Find a cool (or even just random) tutorial
  • Watch it until you see something interesting/cool that sparks inspiration or curiosity
  • Stop the tutorial that moment and see where inspiration takes you

  • Impose some sort of limitation on yourself
  • The more playful/wacky the better
DISCONNECT : FROM : DESIRE
  • Identify something you’re resistant to
  • Connect with it
  • Embrace it with a sense of playful curiosity
FIND : YOUR : VOICE

Use your voice to sketch melodies, harmonies and rhythms

GET : IT : FINISHED
  • Take a track that you’d like to finish
  • Listen to it a few times, making a list of any/all ideas that could be employed to realise its expressive intention
FLIP OUT
  • Get mad
  • Record yourself getting mad – go on, express yourself, really let it out
  • Use the sample as the starting-point for a new composition idea
FINISH  SOMEONE ELSE’S IDEA
  • Take a short extract (e.g. the first bar) from someone else’s track.
  • Develop, extend and ‘recompose’ it to create your own version.

  • Pair two things that would never normally go together
  • Think genres, styles, chords, beats, instruments etc.
